Savonnerie
The old Savonnerie workshops have provided a generic name for all European knotted pile carpets, whether central European, Belgian or Spanish. In fact the output of the Savonnerie in Paris is quite limited and explained in the landmark book by Pierre Verlet: The Savonnerie published by Concordia in 1994. High quality and costly carpets were produced from the reign of Louis XIII and the manufactory continued to embrace the latest designs and fashions in its output. The quality was so high that the carpets graced the most prestigious royal and state rooms of France and were considered suitable as diplomatic gifts. In the mid 18th century the British successfully lured weavers to England bringing weaving, knotting and dyeing techniques to establish a rival workshop at Fulham.
