Pre 1900
The definition of antique is being 100 years old or more. Therefore the threshold for an object being classified as antique is extended every year. The majority of first rate decorative and collectable rugs and carpets were woven in the 19th century when newly expanded international trade routes and dramatically altered patterns of wealth meant that decorative objects of intrinsic and/or artistic value were exported and collected far from their original market of source. Indian Agras were shipped to manor houses in the Home Counties and Caucasian Kazaks were scattered on the marble floors of Italian palazzos.
