Caucasus
The Caucasian mountains extend from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, from Iran to Russia. The intrinsically contemporary Kazak rugs of the South West Caucasus deliver the liveliest of visual sensations. These simplistic geometric village weavings have the undiluted chromatic power of a color field painting and the immediate tactile properties of long lush wool. The scatter rugs of the North Eastern Caucasus are finely woven and closely sheared but the striped and boteh-filled rugs of Lesghi and Shirvan share the exuberant colour and dynamic patterns of the area. From the South West come the distinctive rose patterned gallery carpets of the Karabagh region, created by Armenian weavers to appeal to Western taste, often with geometric bouquets on a blue-black ground.
