China
The carpet is as intrinsically part of the indigenous Chinese culture as a jade carving or a porcelain vase. Often woven in shades of blue and beige with repeated devices of swastikas, fretwork and diapered roundels, or displaying meaningful iconography such as delicate lotus blossoms, classic symbols of longevity, chrysanthemums, fo-dogs, cranes and flaming pearls, these carpets are depicted in paintings dating from as early as the T’ang Period.
