Donegal
A carpet manufactory was established at Killybegs, County Donegal in Ireland. It was intended to provide local employment and find use for the locally produced wool. The carpets were created to be robust and, at first glance, appear to resemble contemporary Oushak carpets. Design varied but the most interesting were original Art and Crafts models designed by Charles F A Voysey (1857 – 1941) and Archibald Knox (1864 – 1933), among others. These were exhibited and marketed by the leading decorating store, Liberty’s, with other Arts and Crafts furniture and textiles. The workshops specialized in bold and innovative colours and colour combinations such as silvers and aubergines, rarely encountered on other carpets. Unfortunately the output declined after WWI.
