Morris & Co Hammersmith

William Morris (1834 – 1896) was determined to revive tapestry and carpet making by hand in Britain.  Both projects were successful.  At Merton Abbey extraordinary tapestries were produced and at Hammersmith a series of great carpets.  Morris designed the first carpets personally - thereafter he collaborated with the designer John Henry Dearle (1860 – 1932), who eventually began to design carpets alone.  Carpets from Morris & Co range from small fireside rugs to huge stateroom carpets.  The carpets frequently have distinctive latticework fringes.
