German Centres Lower Rhine Berlin

Tapestries have been woven in the German principalities since the middle ages when exquisite religious tapestries were woven in small workshops and in convents.  Celebrated works were produced in the 16th and 17th centuries in Munich - the famous workshop of Hans van der Biest, who wove the Peter Candid (c.1548 – 1628 also known as Pietro di Pietro Candido) tapestries commissioned by Duke Maximilian I - also notable works have survived from workshops in Stuttgart among others.  Smaller tapestries and cushion covers were produced in Hamburg, and in the 18th century Berlin became a significant centre, producing Watteau style tapestries.
