Italy
Italian rulers were major importers of Brussels and Southern Netherlandish tapestries. However attempts were also made to produce tapestries locally. The Medici in Florence established the most famous of these workshops and some of the greatest tapestries were produced under Medici patronage, including the monumental Story of Joseph by Agnolo Bronzino (1503 – 1572), and the exquisite groteschi by Francesco Ubertini called Bacchiaca (1494 – 1557). Later in the 16th century superb sets were produced after designs by Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) and Alessandro Allori (1535 – 1607). Workshops were also established in Ferrara and in the 17th century new workshops were set up in Rome by Pope Urban VIII’s nephew, Cardinal Francesco Barberini. Small-scale production also took place in Turin and Naples.
