Old and New Testament
Many of the great figures of the Old Testament and apocrypha were depicted in tapestry, including: Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Gideon, Samson, David, Daniel, Elijah, Esther, Susannah, and Tobias. The New Testament and the apocryphal gospels was also a rich source of subject material. Tapestry sets were woven depicting scenes from The Life of the Virgin, The Nativity, The Flight into Egypt, The Life of Christ, The Passion, The Acts of the Apostles (designed by Raphael), as well as numerous lives of Saints. The sacred subject matter meant that many of these tapestries were designed to portray the holy stories powerfully in pictorial form to elicit awe, and as an aid to worship.
