Tapestry Cushions/Pillows
Tapestry cushions were certainly produced as early as the 15th century where they were known as bankers to add comfort to hard seats and benches. These cushions were specifically designed and many are exquisite works of art. They were used as upholstery. Rare examples were made as lap cushions for bibles and prayer books. Tapestry cushions continued to be popular in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, frequently woven with heraldic devices.
