Wainscot and Antependia
Wainscot tapestries are comparatively rare and sets were designed to hang above panelled rails and viewed at eye level. The considerable width to height ratio provided considerable challenges to the designer. The most successful of these are millefleurs, giant leaf, hunting scenes, and choir tapestries, the latter with their sacred themes were used to decorate cathedrals, abbeys, and churches. Tapestry altar frontals, dossals or antependia were designed and woven to embellish the altar. Some of these are of extraordinary quality, and among the most beautiful tapestries of the medieval and Renaissance periods.
