Crewelwork

Embroidery using ‘crewels’ gained popularity in the last third of the 17th century in England.  These thick crewel threads were used to create a definite sculptural or three-dimensional quality.  Typically these were used as bed curtains and as wall hangings.  The most familiar examples are those sets of designs depicting rows of flowering trees.
