Needlework on Canvas
This technique involves the entire surface of the base material or ‘canvas’ being covered with stitches. It is generally more robust and hardwearing than other types of embroidery and is especially suited for upholstery or even carpets (see Needlework Carpets). A number of different stitches can be employed to achieve varying textures and effects and even a three dimensional quality. This technique was used in North Africa, the Caucasus, and throughout Europe and much of America.
