Russia
Russia is known for exceptional religious textiles certainly from the 14th century onwards. Exquisite embroidered icons were produced, in some ways similar to Byzantine designs. We are familiar with the work of the Stroganoff school. There was also a tradition of hand weaving, which reached a point of perfection in the 19th century with a group of extraordinarily fine Russian shawls. These were woven with up to 60 warps to the inch.
