Textile Pictures Secular

Embroidered pictures especially of allegorical or secular subjects reached a peak in the seventeenth century. Exquisite works of art were produced by gifted amateurs, often by ladies of society in competition with friends and other social families. These women, and frequently young girls, also competed in the production of samplers. Many of the designs were based on published engravings and were adapted to contemporary preoccupations as well as an interest in myth and legend, especially were the story depicted also provided a moral.
